Happy September everyone! I hope you're all transitioning nicely from bikinis to pumpkin spice lattes. I'm going to cut straight to the chase, as I have one of the cutest things ever to tell you about! My friend, Eileen, recently started an Instagram account (and soon to be blog) called The Sassy Environmentalist. Her aim is to educate people on environmental issues and provide alternatives that are stylish and realistic. Eileen recently shared with me an organization that is collecting mascara wands for the wildlife they take in. They use these mascara wands to help clean the animal's fur! Is that not the most amazing thing you have ever heard? Because of the bristles being so close together, mascara wands are perfect for brushing out fly eggs and tiny insects from the animals.
This program is called Wands for Wildlife, and was created by the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge. Located in North Carolina, this organization is a non-profit, volunteer run rehabilitation centre for injured and orphaned wildlife. They also help to educate their community on conservation issues. As well, they are looking to open a Wildlife Urgent Care Facility that will be a "wildlife 911" and donations can be made here.
So what can you do to get involved? It's actually super simple! Just wait until you use up a mascara, wash the wand with soap and water until it is clean, and then contact either myself or Eileen. One of us will come pick it up from you. When we have acquired a decent amount, we will send the mascara wands out to help these animals. If we get a good response from this, we will get in contact with other wildlife rescues to see if we can donate to them too.
